RFID / NFC Smart Ring

by drubin on Thu Sep 14, 2017 1:24 pm

In your text on the website about the RFID / NFC Smart Ring, you
say the ring can read and write nfc tags. The videos and examples all
demonstrate the ring functioning as an NFC tag. Can it really function as
an NFC reader and communicate that tag info back to a computer/smartphone?
that is what I am looking for.

I'm not sure where you are reading that the ring can write tags. This statement
Contains a MiFare Ultralight C - NTAG 213 with 144 bytes of read/write memory.
means data can be read from or written to the ring.

Thanks for the quick reply. The product page description says "Because it can read and write tags...". I do not need to write tags but I would like to have the ring act as a card reader. Is this possible?

NFC is a way for two devices very close to each other to communicate. Sort of like a very short range bluetooth that doesn't require authentication. It is an extension of RFID, so anything you can do with RFID you can do with NFC. Because it can read and write tags, you can always just use this for RFID-tag projects. This ring can be read by any NFC/RFID reader with ISO 14443-3A MiFare Ultralight/NTAG support (which is pretty much all of them), including our PN532 readers and various tablets and phones.
That comment is in reference to NFC not the ring. The ring will not read or write cards. It only acts like a card not the reader.
