Can I use ra8875 driver chip with TI Hercules TMS570LS3137 b

by dinodavid4 on Mon Feb 08, 2016 10:20 pm

I bought ra8875 driver chip along with tft display. The driver chip has SPI connectivity through which it can drive the display. But unfortunately I cannot find the libraries or example project to start using it. The libraries provided by adafruit is for arduino boards. Could anyone please direct me some steps to start with so that I can start porting the existing libraries to TI hercules TMS570LS3137.

Thanks in advance

The code needed to control the chip is in the libraries and what you need to do is convert the functions to your processors language. It's mostly writing to registers within the chip. Our library is here https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_RA8875 and there is another that talks about other processors here https://github.com/sumotoy/RA8875

Hi franklin.. Sorry for the late reply..
What should be the Vin voltage supplied to Driver board??

Do you have an adafruit driver board? Which one?
Or do you have a bare chip?

the board has a regulator on it so 3-5V is good
(its also on the back)

I have a driver board along with tft display purchased from adafruit. I am using this to interface with my TI-Hercules board.
Currently I am trying to port the libraries wrt Hercules board.

I have ported the library for my board. I have to test it. Could you please describe some initial setup. I have some doubts.

1. Does the LCD lits up when connected with input voltage of 5V?
2.I am referring the library I am confused that, why there is reset initially? I do not have any reset pin coming from SPI line?

There is a separate control line for RESET. It it not done through SPI.

The backlight should come on when you power the RA8875.

So should 1 use GPIO to control the RESET? Or is it okay if I don't use it??

Hercules board does not provide 5V input voltage. Hence, I am providing 5 V separately to driver board and connected all other SPI pins from Hercules to the driver board. Will there be any voltage mismatch from the SPI lines of Hercules?? The problem is when I provide the 5V input voltage, the LCD lits up but unfortunately when I power up the Hercules board, the LCD immediately switches off? What could be the reason?

You'll need a reset pin on your hercules. I don't know why the backlight switches off. You probably have a short-circuit someplace.
You'll also need a common ground between the separate display power supply and the Hercules, to act as a digital reference ground

You mean, I have to use RESET pin from hercules and connect it to driver board right?
About the switching off, I have cross checked the connections. But don't know what's wrong?

Also, there seems to be a loose connection everytime when I connect the supply voltage to the driver chip. I have to do some adjustments with the the board to power up i.e. I have to move around the chip from LCD to switch on the display. Some times I feel frustrated because the LCD does not turn ON.

Yes, reset between the Hercules and the RS8875.

Post some pictures of your wiring and soldering
Also, make sure the flat flex connector between the RA8875 and the display is secure.
