Motor shield + 12 volts battery (car battery)

by mhasan on Tue Apr 12, 2016 2:34 am

Hi i have an adafruit motor shield v2, i need to control several DC brushed motors that range from 6 to 12 volts. Is it safe to connect the 12 volt power supply directly into the shield to power the motors? if so where exactly (what pins) do i connect the 12 volts supply?

There is a blue external power terminal block on the edge of the shield. Remove the VIN jumper and connect your power to there. Be sure to observe correct polarity when connecting your power source.

Car batteries when fully charged are about 12.6v. The shield can handle that slight overvoltage. However, when actually charging (such as when your car is running) the charge voltage from your alternator will be more like 14.5v. This is too high for the shield.

If you will be using this with a car battery while it is being charged, you should add some additional regulation to limit the voltage at the shield to 12v.

Thanks we are just using our small car 12volt battery to control some high torque motors, so it is safe on the board right?

The battery alone should be safe for use with the shield.
