If you want just HDMI, then remove the TFT and do not use it. Simply use the Pi as normal and attach an HDMI monitor to the HDMI output. To configure HDMI settings, do some via /boot/config.txt.

If you want HDMI and TFT, then attach the TFT, run the install script from here:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-pit ... -install-2
answer NO to "Would you like the console to appear on the PiTFT display?"
answer YES to "Would you like the HDMI display to mirror to the PiTFT display?"

For HDMI only, what settings should I change in the /boot/config.txt
The default settings don't seem to work.

It would depend on the HDMI display. The easiest thing to try first it to set hdmi_safe=1. So uncomment this line in /boot/config.txt:
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
# uncomment if you get no picture on HDMI for a default "safe" mode
#hdmi_safe=1

remove the # so you get:
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
hdmi_safe=1

The HDMI display is adafruit 5"
No change even after uncommenting that line. I checked if the uncomment actually worked after a power cycle.

I made a video, please see if it helps -

For the Adafruit 5" HDMI display:
https://www.adafruit.com/product/2260
use the config.txt shown in the guide:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-5-8 ... -pi-config

Thanks for the photo. That looks fine.

Let's double check your config.txt. Please post the entire contents of that file here.

Here's the config.txt copy/pasted -

Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
# uncomment if you get no picture on HDMI for a default "safe" mode
hdmi_safe=1

# uncomment this if your display has a black border of unused pixels visible
# and your display can output without overscan
#disable_overscan=1

# uncomment the following to adjust overscan. Use positive numbers if console
# goes off screen, and negative if there is too much border
#overscan_left=16
#overscan_right=16
#overscan_top=16
#overscan_bottom=16

# uncomment to force a console size. By default it will be display's size minus
# overscan.
#framebuffer_width=1280
#framebuffer_height=720

# uncomment if hdmi display is not detected and composite is being output
hdmi_force_hotplug=1

# uncomment to force a specific HDMI mode (here we are forcing 800x480!)
hdmi_group=2
hdmi_mode=87
hdmi_cvt=800 480 60 6 0 0 0
hdmi_drive=1

max_usb_current=1

# uncomment to force a HDMI mode rather than DVI. This can make audio work in
# DMT (computer monitor) modes
#hdmi_drive=2

# uncomment to increase signal to HDMI, if you have interference, blanking, or
# no display
#config_hdmi_boost=4

# uncomment for composite PAL
#sdtv_mode=2

#uncomment to overclock the arm. 700 MHz is the default.
#arm_freq=800

# for more options see http://elinux.org/RPi_config.txt

That is not the same as the one posted in the guide. Please make sure you are using that one:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-5-8 ... -pi-config

It looks like all you may need to do is comment out hdmi_safe=1.

I already tried the config.txt in the link with and without commenting out hdmi_safe.

Just tried again.
Here's the paste of the config.txt
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
# uncomment if you get no picture on HDMI for a default "safe" mode
hdmi_safe=1

# uncomment this if your display has a black border of unused pixels visible
# and your display can output without overscan
#disable_overscan=1

# uncomment the following to adjust overscan. Use positive numbers if console
# goes off screen, and negative if there is too much border
#overscan_left=16
#overscan_right=16
#overscan_top=16
#overscan_bottom=16

# uncomment to force a console size. By default it will be display's size minus
# overscan.
#framebuffer_width=1280
#framebuffer_height=720

# uncomment if hdmi display is not detected and composite is being output
hdmi_force_hotplug=1

# uncomment to force a specific HDMI mode (here we are forcing 800x480!)
hdmi_group=2
hdmi_mode=87
hdmi_cvt=800 480 60 6 0 0 0
hdmi_drive=1

max_usb_current=1

# uncomment to force a HDMI mode rather than DVI. This can make audio work in
# DMT (computer monitor) modes
#hdmi_drive=2

The line is still not commented out. Just erase your current /boot/config.txt and replace it with the contents from the guide.

I replaced the config file with the one in the link .The display is still blank.

Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
# uncomment if you get no picture on HDMI for a default "safe" mode
#hdmi_safe=1

# uncomment this if your display has a black border of unused pixels visible
# and your display can output without overscan
#disable_overscan=1

# uncomment the following to adjust overscan. Use positive numbers if console
# goes off screen, and negative if there is too much border
#overscan_left=16
#overscan_right=16
#overscan_top=16
#overscan_bottom=16

# uncomment to force a console size. By default it will be display's size minus
# overscan.
#framebuffer_width=1280
#framebuffer_height=720

# uncomment if hdmi display is not detected and composite is being output
hdmi_force_hotplug=1

# uncomment to force a specific HDMI mode (here we are forcing 800x480!)
hdmi_group=2
hdmi_mode=87
hdmi_cvt=800 480 60 6 0 0 0
hdmi_drive=1

max_usb_current=1

# uncomment to force a HDMI mode rather than DVI. This can make audio work in
# DMT (computer monitor) modes

Did you reboot the Pi after making the changes?
