5" TFT with Touchscreen (AR1100 TC) Unknown issue

by _MR_X_ on Tue Sep 28, 2021 7:44 pm

Howdy.

I've been having an issue for some time now with the 5" Touch display with the HDMI backpack and touch driver. On touch it recognizes the input but in a very off fashion.
Touching anywhere results in the pointer about 2 thirds across to the right of the screen at the bottom. Same place every time. Dragging upward briefly brings it up for a frame or two but it instantly moves back to where it was when the drag stops. When no touch is present nothing happens.

Thought it was a PC-side issue and moved on to other projects, but now years later it seems it was a hardware problem all along. I've tried it across multiple platforms and OS. Two different arch distros, raspbian and ubuntu across pc, a mini pc and a ras pi. Other touchscreens work fine instantly on connection.
Still open to it being a software problem but I've tried all linux drivers and checked every forum i know of for solutions. None worked.

Cheers.

@_MR_X_,

Are you using our /boot/config.txt?

Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
# uncomment if you get no picture on HDMI for a default "safe" mode
#hdmi_safe=1

# uncomment this if your display has a black border of unused pixels visible
# and your display can output without overscan
#disable_overscan=1

# uncomment the following to adjust overscan. Use positive numbers if console
# goes off screen, and negative if there is too much border
#overscan_left=16
#overscan_right=16
#overscan_top=16
#overscan_bottom=16

# uncomment to force a console size. By default it will be display's size minus
# overscan.
#framebuffer_width=1280
#framebuffer_height=720

# uncomment if hdmi display is not detected and composite is being output
hdmi_force_hotplug=1

# uncomment to force a specific HDMI mode (here we are forcing 800x480!)
hdmi_group=2
hdmi_mode=87
hdmi_cvt=800 480 60 6 0 0 0
hdmi_drive=1

max_usb_current=1

# uncomment to force a HDMI mode rather than DVI. This can make audio work in
# DMT (computer monitor) modes
#hdmi_drive=2

# uncomment to increase signal to HDMI, if you have interference, blanking, or
# no display
#config_hdmi_boost=4

# uncomment for composite PAL
#sdtv_mode=2

#uncomment to overclock the arm. 700 MHz is the default.
#arm_freq=800

# for more options see http://elinux.org/RPi_config.txt

This does require windows software for recalibration. Have you tried it?

No need for boot config in my project. Attempted recalibration and it had little effect. Inspected the board and it all looks fine. Guessing maybe the AR1100 chip itself is bad.

Does it make any difference if you gently press the corners of the screen while actively using the touchscreen? I'm wondering if the TFT top layer is stable.

Probably the easiest way to determine if this is a hardware issue would be to purchase another unit. If that does not work you can return the new unit.

So far no luck.

Gonna go with the banggood option for now. Those seem to like my setup.

Cheers for trying to help though.
