El Wire Issue

by rmart on Wed Jun 14, 2017 11:56 am

Hi,

I bought 2.5m of this EL Wire and this EL Wire 4XAAA pocket inverter.

It arrived today, so I put some fresh batteries in the inverter and plugged in the EL wire but it is not lighting up.

Is there something I'm doing wrong, or is something wonky going on with the equipment?

Thanks for your help!

There's a switch on the battery pack. Make sure that's set to one of the 'on' modes (BL/FULL). Then see if you hear an audible buzz coming from the inverter.

Yes there is a high pitched buzz coming from the inverter.

I've also tried all the different plugs with each of the inverter male pins without any luck.

Any other suggestions?

Sounds like the inverter is at least trying to output power. Can you post a photo showing everything hooked up?

Here are a few pictures.

There is one in there with the inverter on full but the EL wire still off.

If you need anything else just let me know.

Try rotating the connector at the battery box 90deg (see image below). It may be a little hard to tell, but you can see the correct orientation in this product photo:

Thanks! That worked perfectly. I can't believe I didn't think of that lol

One last question - any advice for putting glue on the capacitors in the inverter to help with the buzzing? Is it just a small amount directly on each one?

There's some info on the inverter product page about this. Hopefully it helps:
Like all inverters we've used, the 2000 Hz oscillation is slightly audible. To reduce the squeaking, we suggest opening up the case padding it with thick foam tape/weatherstripping. Squirting some hot glue around the capacitors may also help. We managed to get it silent this way.
