Use PIR motion sensor as on/off switch for PiTFT 2.8"

by Guitarshredda on Thu Jun 15, 2017 2:41 am

Hi,

I'm working on a project for school in which I'm using the Adafruit PiTFT - 320x240 2.8" TFT+Touchscreen for Raspberry Pi (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1601).

In the installation guide, I see that you can use a tactile switch as a power button. Is it possible to use a PIR motion sensor (https://www.adafruit.com/product/189) as a power switch as well? So when there is movement in front of the PIR, the touchscreen goes on and goes off when there's no motion?

Thanks in advance for your help.

In the installation guide, I see that you can use a tactile switch as a power button.

This:

is for powering down the entire system, not just the screen.

So when there is movement in front of the PIR, the touchscreen goes on and goes off when there's no motion?

You could do this in code. Just look for the PIR state and then use this to turn ON/OFF the display:
