2.4" Monochrome OLED issues

by ceggertcrowe on Wed Aug 09, 2017 3:35 pm

I'm working on setting up the 2.4" monochrom OLED. I'm using it with an UNO and utilizing the included level shifter. It's mostly working, but I have two issues.

First, I'm getting a weird display shift or repeat.

I did have to change the resistors to put the display in SPI mode, could I have messed this up? What could be causing this?

Second, I am not getting much brightness driving the display with the arduino. Does anybody know how to drive this with an external power supply?

Thanks all!

Can't see the photo, can you try uploading it directly to the post?

That worked. Can you post another photo showing the whole setup. UNO, level shifter, etc. So I can see all the wires and where they're going.

And just to be sure, this is what you're working with?

Yes that is the display I'm working with.

Here is my wiring. (sorry for the all black wire) I tried to make it a little easier to see. I've checked, checked, checked again and I'm 100% sure it's wired the way that's shown in the tutorial. I had to switch to a nano last night because the headers on my UNO finally broke. I'm still seeing exactly the same result though. I have also noticed that the display won't drive with the 3.3v and I have to drive it with 5v. I still have 3.3v to the level shifter, but the 5v going to the display power pins.

I'm not seeing a GND connection coming off the Nano, just 3.3V and then a bunch of digital IO.

Also, your breadboard looks like it has split power rails. Are you aware of that?

The ground is attached, I guess just not shown in the picture. The power rails are continuous positions 1-30.

OK. Sounds like you know about the split power rails.

I have also noticed that the display won't drive with the 3.3v and I have to drive it with 5v.

Hmmm. Maybe switch back to 3.3V to be consistent with the guide.

Did you set the display to SPI mode?

Your general digital pin hook up looks OK. But in the image below, where does the white wire go (TO 5V?). Also, the one slightly hidden black wire, where does it go (GND?).

Yes, you have it labeled correctly. When I use the 3.3v fore everything I get absolutely nothing from the display. Everything is blank. Could something be wrong with the level shifter?

Still need to know (specifically): where does the white wire go (TO 5V?). Also, the one slightly hidden black wire, where does it go (GND?).

to 5V where? to GND where? and on what?

White wire goes to 5v on nano
Black wire goes to GND on nano

OK. How about setting SPI mode via jumpers? (done?)

Could something be wrong with the level shifter?

Dunno. Post a photo of the top of it clear enough to read the labeling.
