NeoPixel FeatherWing woes

by chucktdriscoll on Thu Aug 10, 2017 6:29 pm

I recently purchased a NeoPixel FeatherWing and just got around to hooking it up. I started with a strand test just to check it out, and three pixels will not display any amount of green (but show red and blue just fine), the last two pixels don't illuminate at all (of note, the pixel right before those two is one that won't display green), and after the strand test runs for a few minutes, all the pixels after the first one that won't show green stop updating (they just continue to stay lit at whatever colors/intensities they were at). Wat do?

Post a photo of your setup showing all connection. Which of the Feather boards are you using to drive the NeoPixel wing?

I've tested it with both a Feather nRF52 and a Feather 32u4 Bluefruit LE, both using the NeoPixel Wing's default input pin. The headers are soldered on and mount to female/stacking headers on the MCU board. Using a powered USB hub as power source and also tried a 2500mAh lipoly battery (that was purchased from Adafruit) with no change in noted behavior.

Looks good, solder-wise and hookup-wise. What exactly was the demo code you were running?

The default strandtest sketch from the Neopixel library (version 1.1.2 of that library) in Arduino IDE, just adjusted for the control pin on the MCU and the number of pixels on the wing (so, pin 30 for the nRF52 and 32 pixels). Otherwise unmodified. The wire bonds in the failed LEDs look fine through a 60x scope, but that's not really worth much either way. Obviously the wing was stacked while power was not connected and the MCU had no sketch loaded using that pin prior to powering and uploading the test sketch.

Weird. Wondering if there might be something going on with the library and the M4. But same thing with the 32u4? That should be fine.

Let's try a replacement. Email support@adafruit.com and they'll get you one.
