3.5'' screen issue

by Peter009 on Wed Nov 08, 2017 7:49 pm

Hello!
I just got my 3.5'' screen today (PID: 2050) and I'm having issues with it. I tried the graphicstest from the HX8357 library on my pro trinket in the SPI mode and I just got a white screen. Then I tried it on my Mega 2560 and I had the same problem, just a white screen. I checked my connections and my soldering 4 times and I can't find anything wrong with them. It seems like it's being powered but there's no communication between the micro and the screen.

Can someone tell what can I do? This is for a project I need to finish this week, so any input in this will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I forgot to mention I soldered the IM2 jumper in the back.
I've tried the graphicstest and the spitftbitmap examples and neither one works. At the very beginning it seems like it is about to start working, the screen blinks a few times and then it's dead again.
This is a picture of my soldering. I made sure that I don't have any "solder jumpers" between pins.

Maybe my screen is faulty? If so, is there any way I can get a replacement within this week? I really need to finish this project this week!

Thank you.

Shouldn't that ground be connected?

It is connected. Is the black cable below the orange one. It's kind of hard to see but is there.

My experience may or may not be relevant. Depends on whether you have a 5v or 3v Pro Trinket and depends on how you are powering your screen.

I found while using a Feather m0 that if I power the screen from the regulated 3v pin I usually got a white screen. Seemed like taking screen power from the onboard regulator hosed up something. Since display can be powered from 3 to 5 volt, my solution was to power the screen from the 5v USB pin.

So if you have a 3v PT and your powering from the regulator try moving to the USB pin. I have no explanation for your Mega experience.

Thank you BryonMiller!
I have the 5v version of the pro trinket and I've been powering my screen from the 5v pin on both the pro trinket and the mega. Any other ideas of what could be wrong with it?

I assume you bridged the connection needed for SPI as shown here. I did not, I just used a jumper from 3Vo to IM2. You have to do one of these things. If you did, I'm out of ideas.

Yes, I bridged the IM2 connection in the back, and still nothing happens.
I appreciate your input!

Hopefully an Adafruit person will get back to you. They'll probably want to know what Graphicstest reported back on the Serial Monitor.

Thank you. This is what my serial monitor shows when I run the graphicstest:

So it looks like data is going back and forth between the screen and the board, but there's nothing showing in the screen.

Hook it all back up with the Pro Trinket and post another photo that shows the wiring connections on both ends - display and Trinket.

For SPI mode you don't need to hook up RST:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-3-5 ... est#wiring
otherwise the wiring looks correct. Also assuming white is going to 5V and blank to GND on the Pro Trinket.

Some of your solder points look like they may be a little cold soldered. See here:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-gui ... n-problems
Try reflowing them to see if you can get them to wet out a little better. Once you've done that, try running the example sketch again:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-3-5 ... ft-library

Also check your soldering on the SPI mode jumper:

Hi!
I re-soldered everything 3 times and the pins look better. I tried continuity on my multi-tester and everything seems normal. I also have a 2.8'' screen I bought from you that I used with SPI on my pro trinket with no problems, so I know the soldering points in the trinket are good. s
This is how my soldering points look now:

But all I get is this white screen. Is there anything else I can try? Or maybe I can get a replacement? I really need to have this screen working this week.
Thank you!

Let's try a replacement. Email support@adafruit.com with your order number and a link to this thread and they can help you out.
