HDMI 5" Display Backpack Without Touch not working

by erikc1 on Fri Nov 10, 2017 9:07 pm

I recently purchased the "HDMI 5" Display Backpack - Without Touch ID:2232" and haven’t be able to get the display to work.

When connecting the microUSB cable, the unit powers on with the "PWR-GOOD" LED lighting up without any issue.

When connecting the HDMI cable, I either get: 1) a blank screen when I connect to my Windows laptop and desktop, or 2) flickering horizontal lines, when I connect to my Raspberry Pi (see attached photo).

The "VIDEO-GOOD" LED lights up only when I have the Raspberry Pi plugged in via HDMI and the flickering horizontal lines are displayed.

I have tried swapping the HDMI cables without any improvement to my current situation.

I've also tried reseating the ribbon connector based on the advice from this forum post without any improvement to my current situation:

I am wondering what the next step should be in getting a working 5" display. I am hoping to use this display for both my Raspberry Pi and desktop computer.

Did you set up the raspberry pi config.txt file?

In HDMI, the source and the display 'negotiate' for a resolution to use. Typically, the display will support several resolutions, and the source will support several resolutions. The negotiation process looks for resolutions that are supported by both the source and the display, and the source will pick the one it wants to use.

However, this display only has the one resolution - 800x600. If the source doesn't support that., then the negotiation process fails, and nothing is displayed.

I suspect that's what's happening with the GoPro. You can check the documentation to see if it supports 800x600
