Lens for WS2812 neopixel

by TheElementronics on Tue Nov 28, 2017 6:01 pm

Hi guys

I bought a lens for my RGB neopixel, in hope that i can create a DIY moving head. That lens transforme the source light into a lightbeam with 10 degree angle.
The problem is Snell´s Law, and more directly the different wavelenght of RGB.
If the led is red/blue/green I get one red/blue/green lightbeam, but when I try to mix R/G/B I get 3 separated lightbeams, and that is not what I want.
EXAMPLE:

WHITE = (R,G,B)=(255,255,255)

AND I WANNA GET SOMETHING LIKE THIS

The WS2812 is three separate LEDs in one case so if you focus that you will see three colored dots. You need to diffuse the beam before focusing it.

Thank you
Do you know if exists diffusing lens for ws2812, I bought a lens on eBay, but is a refracting 10degree lens
I also search for diffusing methods, but I think that a lens will work better

You could try adding a layer of diffusion film between the led and the lens. You can find this at sign shops and plastics suppliers. However, given the short distances involved, you are not likely to get perfect mixing of the light from the 3 colored elements.

If you are looking for white light, you would be better off starting with a white LED instead of RGB.
