WS2812 problem with Feather Huzzah

by fahrvergnuugen on Tue Dec 05, 2017 9:57 am

I have two strands of WS2812 LEDs, one is 250 pixels long and the other is 310 pixels long. I'm using the FastLED library to drive them.

Because the Huzzah is 3.3v logic, I used a logic converter to get a 5v signal for the LEDs.

The problem is that the LEDs flicker when being driven from the Huzzah + Logic converter, and I can't figure out why.

If I limit the strand length to around 50 LEDs, they seem to work fine, but as I increase the LED count the flickering becomes worse and worse.

Here's the schematic: https://i.imgur.com/VX6TUIP.png
Video of the flickering: https://i.imgur.com/vHLskbi.mp4 (Note the blue lights pulse in a wave, to give an underwater effect which is intentional, the problem is the flickering.)

These strands work perfectly fine when being driven directly by an Arduino Uno. The problem with the Uno is that it only has enough memory to drive around 440 of the total 560 LEDs. I also want to be able to control them remotely, so I needed wifi.

Anyone have any idea why I'm getting this flicker problem with the Huzzah and not the Uno?
