Stupid question? Two Neopixel sticks in series to run from 1

by seanspotatobusiness on Tue Dec 12, 2017 3:25 am

I was wondering could I power two Neopixel LED sticks from a 12 V supply if I put them in series (so positive rail of one is connected to negative rail of the other). Would that work if, say, the lights on one were off while the lights on the other are on or would it only work if they were both trying to draw the same current at the same time?

No. Neopixels are designed for 5v operation. Anything above about 5.5v will result in permanent damage.

But even with a 10v supply, if connected in series they would not work since all the pixels need a common ground.

Hi. Thanks very much for your fast response. The product page for the Neopixel sticks says that they accept "4-7V"; my understanding is that the product requirements for different Neopixel products varies.

Anyway, as you say, it still won't work; back to the drawing board!
