Dotstar Beam Angle

by glowman on Wed Jan 03, 2018 11:03 am

Hello!

What is the emitted beam angle of dotstar LEDs? The datasheet has a "View Angle = H 160." Is that 160 degrees?

Are beam angle and view angle the same thing? In my experience most LED strips have a Beam Angle of 120 degrees, so I want to confirm before I start designing my diffusion system.

Thanks,
Glowman

Like most planar emitters, DotStars have a Lambertian emission pattern. The intensity is proportional to the cosine of the angle from the central axis. A true Lambertian pattern will approach zero as the angle approaches 90 degrees - giving a beam width approaching 180 degrees. But since the actual die for the emitter sits below the surface of the chip package, there will be some clipping of the beam at the extreme edges. That is most likely the reason for the 160 degree spec.
