Adafruit 1.44" Color TFT LCD Display not working

by jimk123 on Sun Jan 28, 2018 5:49 pm

I bought these two products:
Adafruit AMG8833 IR Thermal Camera Breakout PRODUCT ID: 3538
Adafruit 1.44" Color TFT LCD Display with MicroSD Card breakout - ST7735R PRODUCT ID: 2088

and I was following the tutorial here:

https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-amg ... r?view=all

and the first two tests, amg88xx_test and pixels_test worked ok

then I wired up the display screen, Adafruit 1.44" Color TFT LCD Display and when I loaded the thermal_cam sketch on the serial monitor I see this:

AMG88xx thermal camera!
-- Thermal Camera Test --

but the display screen is on with a white background and nothing happens when I move my hand over the camera

Then i tried the TFT tutorial
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-1-4 ... t?view=all

and uncommented this as directed:
// Use this initializer (uncomment) if you're using a 1.44" TFT
tft.initR(INITR_144GREENTAB); // initialize a ST7735S chip, black tab

compiled and loaded OK but still a white screen. it says You may need to press the Reset button to reset the arduino and TFT which I tried.
I noticed on that demo there is no wire on pin 12 to the TFT SO pin but in the thermal camera demo it does show a wire, tried it both ways and still nothing on the display but the white background.

attached are a few pics of the wiring

thoughts ?

Let's focus on the display. In case there is some interference from the AMG88xx, redo your setup without it in the mix. Basically just follow that TFT guide:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-1-4 ... g-and-test
and see if you still get the same response.

Also, when you uncommented that one line (GREENTAB), did you also remember to comment out the other one (BLACKTAB) so it looks like:
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
// Use this initializer if you're using a 1.8" TFT
//tft.initR(INITR_BLACKTAB);   // initialize a ST7735S chip, black tab

// Use this initializer (uncomment) if you're using a 1.44" TFT
tft.initR(INITR_144GREENTAB);   // initialize a ST7735S chip, black tab

i believe I did this right - here is the section of code:

void setup(void) {
Serial.begin(9600);
Serial.print("Hello! ST7735 TFT Test");

// Use this initializer if you're using a 1.8" TFT
//tft.initR(INITR_BLACKTAB); // initialize a ST7735S chip, black tab

// Use this initializer (uncomment) if you're using a 1.44" TFT
tft.initR(INITR_144GREENTAB); // initialize a ST7735S chip, black tab

// Use this initializer (uncomment) if you're using a 0.96" 180x60 TFT
//tft.initR(INITR_MINI160x80); // initialize a ST7735S chip, mini display

Serial.println("Initialized");

Yep. That looks correct. So let's see what happens with just the display attached running that test sketch.

so I removed all the jumper wires for the thermal sensor and compiled/uploaded graphicstest.ino

in the serial window is says:
Hello! ST7735 TFT TestInitialized
84
done

but the display is just a solid white background

Try reseating all the cables just to see if there might be a marginal connection somewhere. Based on your photos, the wiring looks correct in terms of the pins used on the UNO. You don't need to worry about the SO pin, it's for the data card, the TFT display should work without it hooked up.

Also, a little hard to tell for sure, but your soldering is a little sparse on the pins. They look OK, but maybe worth taking a look at.

Do you have a multimeter we could use to test some voltages?

Ok, In the morning I’ll get another breadboard and different set of jumper wires rewire it just to ensure that is not a problem. I used a magnifying glass to check the solder connections but will also try to do a basic continuity check on them.

I do have a multimeter so if there any pins you want me to check let me know
Thanks

i got a new breadboard, new wires and same results
attached is a new pic of the wiring minus the thermal sensor
let me know if there are any voltage measurements you want me to take

That looks fine. Try measuring the voltage on the Vin and 3v pins.

I see 1.68 v between vin and the 3.3v pins

Sorry, meant both pins with respect to ground. So two measurements:
GND to Vin
GND to 3v
Although your measurement is just 5v - 3.3v, so it sounds like they are both outputting the correct voltage.

Gnd to 3.3 = 3.26v
Gnd to 5v = 4.94v

It's getting good power. Your connections all look good. Code's been changed correctly. Dunno. Let's try a replacement.

Send an email to support@adafruit.com with a link to this thread and your order number and they can get you a replacement TFT display (PID 2088).

When you get the replacement, try it out with that nice clean simple hook up like in your last photo and make sure the example works before moving on to trying to incorporate the AMG88.
