RGB LED Matrix not lighting up at all

by swemoney on Mon Feb 05, 2018 8:45 am

I purchased all of the things I would need to follow this guide (https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-rgb-matrix-plus-real-time-clock-hat-for-raspberry-pi?view=all) from Adafruit. Order number 1663720-6931934293. This was purchased a week ago (1/28/2018).

Setting up the Pi was easy. Assembling the LED Matrix Hat was simple. Plugging everything in was a piece of cake. I have not been able to get any sort of functionality out of the LED matrix, though. No lights every light up. I've tried countless (pretty much every combination) of software configuration in both the adafruit rpi-fb-matrix repo (https://github.com/adafruit/rpi-fb-matrix) as well as the original rpi-rgb-led-matrix repo (https://github.com/hzeller/rpi-rgb-led-matrix/) and no matter what settings for rows/cols/chain/etc. I try, the LED matrix is unresponsive. I have also tested an additional (different) Adafruit LED Matrix Hat as well as an extra Raspberry Pi 3 to see if either of those things might have been causing an issue. Still nothing on the LED matrix. So 2 separate Rapsberry Pi 3's and 2 separate RGB Matrix Hats with the same LED matrix all produce the same result.

The Pi is running Raspian Stretch Lite. I've disabled the onboard sound driver as requested by the rpi-rgb-led-matrix library with no difference made. I have run out of things to try so I could use any help that I might not have thought about or I'll need a new LED matrix to replace this one.

The red edge on the ribbon cable indicates the location of pin 1. It looks like it's swapped on your HAT. Note the orientation here:

Try swapping the cable around. I think you have the correct orientation on the panel side, so keep the red edge in the same location there.

Thanks for the suggestion! That was indeed the problem. I guess the new issue is that the cable the LED matrix came with doesn't have the notches in the correct location because I had to forceibly push the cable into the LED matrix backwards (not lined up with the notch on the socket) in order to keep the red line at the same spot on the LED matrix while flipping the red line on the hat. Any solution for replacing the cable?

Glad that solved the problem. Not sure what is up with the cables / notches not lining up. I will pass this on to have it looked into.

[EDIT]: Can you post a photo of the ribbon cable that came with the display showing the position of the alignment notches on both end connectors.

ooh weird, yah you can either file/sand the notch off one side *or* if you want we can send you another cable. email support@adafruit and request *just the cable* (we have spares)
