Neopixel Ring and Metro Mini

by JustBlaze3113 on Tue Feb 13, 2018 1:57 pm

I am about to purchase a Neopixel ring and a couple of retro minis for my toy box project. i wanted to add music as well by using the music maker shield for the Feather. I was wondering do I need to purchase the feather to use the music maker, or can I run the Neopixel ring and the music maker shield with the metro mini?

You should be able to make it work with the Metro. But it would be a lot easier with the Feather. The MusicMaker wing has a lot of connections. It is designed to plug directly into the Feather. With the Metro, you would need to use jumpers for them all. There may also be a need for some level shifting between the 5v Metro and the Wing which runs on 3.3v.

So I can purchase the feather and with that I can be able to use both the music maker and the Neopixel ring?

Yes. The Feather will handle the Neopixel ring. How are you planning to power this project?
If this will be a battery powered project, you can power the Neopixels directly from the same 3.7v LiPo as the Feather.

I was planning to use a 5v plug in, do i need to have the voltage step down before it powers the feather?

The Feather has an on-board 3.3v regulator so it can be powered from 5v. The problem is that Neopixels work best with a control signal level that is close to the supply voltage. If the pixels are powered with 5v, they may not respond reliably to the 3.3v signal from the Feather. You may need to add a level shifter between the Feather and the Pixels.

However, if the Neopixels are powered at 3.7v, no level shifting is needed for a 3.3v control signal. So the solution would be to power the Feather with 5v as planned, but also connect a 3.7v LiPo and power the Neopixels from the GND and BAT pins. (The Feather has a built-in charger for the LiPo)

Awesome so even though the LiPo Bat is connected directly to the neopixels, that bat can be recharged with the feather? Or i would have to plug in the battery directly to the feather?

Plug the LiPo into the JST connector on the Feather. That will charge it up when 5v is connected.
Power your Neopixels from the GND and BAT pins on the feather. That will draw power directly from the battery.
