Led strip ligths up only up to a point

by Lorian on Sun Apr 15, 2018 7:11 am

Hello! It's the first time I post something as I usually google myself through a problem but this time I'm genuinelly stuck.

So I've got 3 neopixel rgb led strips with 144 leds per meter (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1506) and connected 298 leds together. Then hooked it up to the 5V 16MH Pro trinket (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2000) which is connected to the 1000 powerboost (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2465) and powering it with lithium Ion battery pack 3,7V 6600mAh (https://www.adafruit.com/product/353). But the strip only lights up to 132 leds.

Fisrt I though it was a broken led or somthing but when I cut the strip on that point and connected it from that point to the trinket again it light up just for 10 leds and then nothing. The most weird thing is that the light doesn't stop on any on my connections but in the middle of the strip where there is no soldering or connected involved.

After that I thougth maybe my code was at fault so I just uploaded the strandtest, again same thing, it just lighted 2 more leds (134 total) and then nothing. I also tried to connect it to the arduino uno as I thought maybe the trinket couldn't manage so many leds but i got the same results.

So I'm officially utterly stuck beyond my understanding. Please help.
Thank you in advance!

It looks like you are just powering from one spot. That means all the power has to flow through the pcb trace. Try tying power and ground to each of your splices. This part of the Uber guide talks about it https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-neopixel-uberguide?view=all#distributing-power

Thank you Keith for the input!

So I followed what you suggested and added 3 more power points (cutted the 5V and ground wire and connected a new one that went straigth to the powerboost) between my strips but still got the same results.
Adding an extra battery to the end of the strip did light up more pixels but they lighed up in different colours and random points (some would be on then 3 off then another one would be on again and so on).
What could I do wrong?

Thanks again in advance to anyone answering

According to this power estimate section of the Uber guide https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-neopixel-uberguide?view=all#estimating-power-requirements the powerboost one amp output may not be able to handle that many pixels.
