Dotstar 144/m strip: APA102 or SK9822?

Post by jmkasunich »

The description of the DotStart 144 LED/meter strip (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2242) says it uses the APA102C controller, but there is a link to a datasheet for the SK9822. The two are similar but not the same (PWM frequency varies, for example - see this blog post: https://cpldcpu.BANNED.com/2016/12/1 ... he-apa102/)

Rumor has it that the APA102C has been discontinued, and the SK9822 is replacing it. Our project really wants the higher PWM frequency of the APA102.

So, which chip do your LED strips use?

Other rumors say that a new APA107 is out there which is better than either the APA102 or the SK9822. So far I haven't found a retail supplier or distributor. Any thoughts on the future of these products?

Hmm, further confusion.
Product 2242 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2242 - referred to above) has a white PCB and links to the SK9822 datasheet.
Product 2241 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2241) has a black PCB and links to the APA102 datasheet
Product 2329 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2329) is a half-meter version, white PCB, and links to the APA102 datasheet.

Is there a way to be SURE that we get product using the APA102?

I'll check with the manufacturing team.

we can't completely guarantee it because we don't manufacture the strips in-house, but we believe they are SK9822
