I2C_ERROR_BUSY from 1.2" 4-Digit 7-Segment Display

by Dave1138 on Tue Jan 08, 2019 7:12 am

I have a Adafruit 1.2" 4-Digit 7-Segment Display w/I2C Backpack - Green (PRODUCT ID: 1268) controlled by a ESP32-Gateway using the Arduino IDE (Adafruit_GFX.h & Adafruit_LEDBackpack.h) and I am using it as a timer.

Everything appears to work fine, however if i leave the display counting up for an hour or so, when I return to it, it has hung. The ESP32 is still responsive but Wire.endTransmission (in Adafruit_7segment.writeDisplay) returns error 5 (I2C_ERROR_BUSY). No other I2C devices are connected. A full power reset is required to clear the error.

What could be the cause of this?

What pullup resistors are used on the backpack (v_io = 3.3v)?
