Pi 3+, 3.5" TFT does not rotate in HDMI setup

by bobmoore_maple on Thu Jan 10, 2019 3:29 pm

Pi 3+, 3.5" TFT does not rotate in HDMI setup -- I want to see the HDMI screen at 180 degrees on the TFT so my FreqShow is not sitting on the cables, but on a solid surface. But changing the orientation in the provided setup script doesn't change the orientation at all. Is there a missing command, a bug or a non-existent feature? Otherwise FreqShow is marvelous and useful.

This sounds like it's specific to FreqShow? If you run through the setup here:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-pit ... -install-2
does the rotation work?

This is not specific to FreqShow. That is just where it is the most inconvenient. The desktop does not rotate either.

I have been re-running the setup, trying both 0 and 180 for the rotation. The results are the same.

I just tested the script above and rotation settings worked for me. What options are you selecting when you run it?

First question (Which unit) - #4 ( 3.5" PiTFT)
Second question (Rotation) - I tried both #2 (180 degrees) and #4 (0 degrees)
Third question (Text console) - No
Fourth question (HDMI Mirror) - Yes
Last question (Frame Buffer) - No
It appears that the last three questions are mutually exclusive (only one can be yes). Is that correct?

I have attempted no calibration of the touch screen, as it seemed to work fine, albeit slowly.

I did enable the mouse in the FreqShow Python code.

Thank you for your prompt responses...

That's seems to be same as what I'm doing. And when it reboots the rotation is applied. I can run the script again and change it again. For now, I'm just using the Raspbian Desktop. I haven't done anything with FreqShow yet.

What operating system image are you starting from?

I downloaded the one recommended in the FreqShow setup and used that, but have occasionally run apt-get to upgrade it.

Looks like the FreqShow guide just says to use Raspbian. Were you following the recommendations from the TFT guide here?

Yes, it is referred to by the FreqShow guide.

OK. Then I guess we're doing the exact same thing. So I'm not sure why it's not working for you. Can you post a photo of what your screen looks like we you try the 180 deg rotation.

SUCCESS! Sorry it took so long, but the process was glacial.
After numerous tries with different combinations of the parameters and many cryptic error messages, I found the combination that works as desired: 4,3,n,y
Text in console mode is very small and unreadable. Frame buffer mode just resulted in crashes.
The key was discovered in console mode the orientation was correct at 270 degrees (option 3).
HDMI works well in 270 landscape, and landscape is the right choice for FreqShow.
Thanks for your help and encouragement.

Woot. OK. Keeping up with linux has made things challenging with that script. But we sure hope it is currently working.

Glad you finally got it rotated!
