New 128x64 OLED Display 2712 Not Working

Post by jwardell »

Customer service directed me to post my issue here.

It appears the 2719 OLED display that I received in my recent order is not functioning.

I've tried both SPI and I2C modes on my original Teensy board, and then again exactly as shown in the tutorial with an Uno and the level shifter. I've tried with and without the included capacitor, and moved the mode resistors as applicable. I never see anything on the display. The LED on the Arduino boards does blink as expected as if it were sending data to the display when running the SSD1305test program.

Is there any simple way for me to test with a few simple connections, to light a part of the display in some way?

I don't see any visual burning, solder issues, or broken components.

What wiring are you trying to do in the photo? It looks like left over SPI with I2C in place instead?

Are you using this for wiring?

Yes there is leftover SPI wiring unused, but the I2C wiring it what is used in the photo as shown in the tutorial. The display does not respond in either mode. Is there any other way to test it?

Check your wiring on pins 8 and 9. You need to add a little jumper there. I2C wiring:

The jumper is there, sorry it is blocked by the display in that angle

Let's check your mode jumpers. Please post a photo of the backside of the display.

It's now been a week since I've first contacted customer support about this.

I still have not seen an answer to my question, is there a simpler way to test the display with some voltage on some pins etc?

Unfortunately schematics and layout are not provided for this board so it's impossible to troubleshoot on our own.

Jumpers look OK for I2C.

Not much beyond just making sure the power pins are good.

Unfortunately schematics and layout are not provided for this board so it's impossible to troubleshoot on our own.
They are here:

Found one more possible wiring issue. This voltage divider needs to go to ground, not 3v.

Unfortunately moving the divider did not solve the issue, it still does not function.

I've read through all the provided data sheets, but they do not contain schematics or board layout.

3.3V, ground, and signal pins look good. Should I be seeing 15V on any of the edge pins (I don't)?
Again tough to troubleshoot without layout.

Have you done the necessary code changes in the example when using I2C?

Yes, as I stated in the first post:
I followed all instructions for software and hardware SPI with the example sketch. On a different breadboard with a Teensy 3.1.
When it would not work after several rounds or examining connections, hardware, and software, I built everything exactly as published with an Uno, again using SPI.
In all cases LEDs flash as expected, signals look good. I still had nothing on the display.
So, I switched all code, wiring, and resistors over to I2C in an attempt to simplify things and try a different format. Still no response from display.
After wasting three days I emailed customer support. The next day I was instructed to post here as they are not authorized to issue a replacement, which certainly would have saved an additional week of troubleshooting.
I understand your desire to troubleshoot every single detail, but with the nature of things like this there are quite a few variables. This is why I asked from the start if there is a simpler way to test display response with less variables. The documentation is only for the OLED module itself, not for the interface board, which again adds another layer of unknowns.

The display is sold as a module. We do not have details about the module level circuitry beyond what is in the available documents. It works if wired as shown in the guide. I just re-verified that for I2C mode:

Try starting over with the I2C setup. Remove all the SPI related stuff. Restage the display with just the I2C related wiring. Breadboards can sometimes be finicky and simply redoing the setup up can help. This will also clean things up for troubleshooting. Try the sketch again and post a photo of this restaged setup.

That all looks fine. Let's replace it. Go straight to trying I2C with the new one with the above setup.

You can send another email to [email protected] and link back to this thread and they can get your a replacement OLED.
