Total noob pi zero / NeoPixel pre-sale question.

by leonshelhamer on Mon Feb 18, 2019 6:51 pm

Hello, I am completely new to Raspberry Pi but i am determined to install LEDs on my roller skates on my own. So far based on the look I want and measurements of products and my skates I have picked out 2 x Raspberry Pi Zero W, 2 x Lithium Ion Polymer Battery - 3.7v 2500mAh, and 1 x Adafruit NeoPixel Digital RGBW LED Strip - Black PCB 144 LED/m - 1m.

I have read some articles but don't feel confident on what else to buy? Can any one advise articles / docs, that I can read in order to figure out what wires, SD, etc, I need? Maybe switches although the goal is to control the LEDs from my iPhone. The programming part I am ok with, I am just new to hardware.

Thank you in advice, sorry to ask noob questions. In my defense i did spend a few hours trying to figure it out on my own, I just want to be able to order everything at once.

How do you want the pixels to act and is there a reason you chose the Pi Zero?

I want the pixels to be be able to switch among several behaviors that I program. One behavior would be the same as the example video in the strip product page https://www.adafruit.com/product/2848. I chose the Pi Zero due to size, it has to be able to fit between the sole of the skate and the truck. My ambition is to toggle the behaviors from my iPhone, but I would be ok with a remote, or touch switches on the skates. I would like the two skates to communicate with each other, so the behavior modes would be in sync if desired.

I'd look at the Feathers with bluetooth.
