Uncanny eyes not displaying properly

by dhoffstetter on Sat Aug 03, 2019 7:17 pm

Hi,
I am using a Teensy3.2 along with TFT display to run the uncanny eyes project. The eyes are not displayed properly - there is no color and they are offset. There is animation. I know the TFT displays are okay because they worked with the Raspberry Pi snake eyes bonnet.

I re-wired the eyes (twice) from scratch with the same result.
The only change I made to the config.h file was to comment out the OLED library and add the TFT one.

Other info..
Mac 10.14.5
Arduino 1.8.9
Teensyduino 1.4.6
Adafruit libraries (from library manager):
Adafruit GFX 1.5.6
Adafruit ST7735 1.4.0
Adafruit Zero DMA 1.0.4

Any suggestions to fix this would be appreciated. Thanks!
Diane

What's your clock speed set at? 9x overclocking (the default) probably won't work.

Hi Jim,

Per the instructions, I set the clock to 72MHz.

Can you post a photo that also shows the wiring connection to the Teensy.

Looks a little different than first photo. Only right eye? That's OK, let's just test the displays individually.

With that setup, try running the graphictest demo from the ST7735 library:

making the necessary pin changes here:

Hi,
I forgot to mention when I sent the pictures that I rewired with just one screen.
I will try the tests that you suggested and let you know the results.

Thanks,
Diane

Hi,

I think that I found the problem.
When I ran the graphic test demo, I saw the same issue. But then I updated the graphic test code to use the ST7789 (which is what I have). The display worked as expected.
The uncanny eyes code that I have does not support the ST7789. I just assumed that since it worked with the RPi code, that the same displays would work with this code with the Teensy.

I assume that I can update the code to work with ST7789. If not, please let me know before I spend the time to do it.

Thanks for your help.

You might be able to, but the code is pretty optimized. So it might take some doing to make sure all the subtle #def's etc. are taken care of.

as Carter says. I was able to get a single eye to function well on the ST7789:

Just as an update: I have moved most of the code for uncannyeyes via C++ to a teensy, which runs an adafruit 1.44 or 1.8 LCD no issues. I just needed to #include <Adafruit_ST7789.h>. You can carefully edit all the major functions to get a single canthus minus eye. Remove the logo and paint background black and eye looks great on a 1.8" . Also, I have configured the setup to include neopixels in varoius configs such as running down the row, fade, random flash, and a basic fire glow.

One thing that makes it easier is to get the adafruit GFX test functioning first on the ST7789, then get the eye going....
