increase brightness of neopixel in sunlight

by mclien on Tue Aug 06, 2019 4:06 pm

I'm working on my LED watch, in which I use neopixels as Display for the time. The LEDs are hidden behind a (very thin) layer of veneer.

currently the pixelring is powered directly from the LiPoly cell, which of course has lower voltage as nominal for the pixelring (3.7V instead of 5V).

I've tried to use the green color in max brightness, but not bright enough to read in sunlight.

Some ideas I had to increase the brightness:
- use a Voltage step up to power the pixelrings
- use some luminescent material over the LEDs
- find brighter glowing LEDs (are the dotstar brighter?
- even overpower the LEDs to the tolerance (with a stepup voltage

any hints welcome

Try them on 5 volts and if that is sufficient you could use a boost circuit but that is as bright as you are going to get. I don't know the relative brightness difference between Neopixels and Dotstars.
