HX8357 tftLCD Wont work after Power Cycle with Mega

by Arduinomaltster on Wed Aug 07, 2019 10:26 am

I am trying to use the HX8357 3.5" tftLCD breakout to display and change variables to control a set of relays based on temperature and humidity variables that are set and adjusted using the arduino mega eeProm. I have the board receiving temp/hum data via a nRF24 on an arduino nano.

- I am using hardware SPI for the display
-I am using software SPI for the RF24

Everything works as it should for the most part after I upload my sketch. At random times the screen might go white and I am unable to get it to reset. It seems like it might be a power issue or loose connection on my breadboard. I will have to test that out more. However, after I power cycle my board I cant get the sketch to run at all even if I reload my sketch. For a while I was able to press the reset button on the mega to get the sketch to run, but now nothing. If I load the graphics test or breakouttouch sketch then reload my sketch, I can get my sketch running again. But not after power cycle still. This is very bizarre behavior. I cant tell if it is my arduino mega or if it is the lcd.

Another strange thing is that I cant get the screen or my sketch to work if I am using the barrel jack.

Has this happened to anyone else? Any input would be appreciated.

Hi, Arduinomaltster!

Can you post you code? (Be sure to highlight it and press the CODE button to format it nicely.)
Can you also post a couple sharp images of your wiring? (800 x 600 works great.)

Cheers,

Eric

Thanks for the response Eric. I had an extra mega around to see if it might be the board. Same sketch, same wiring. Now everything works as it should. Very weird. I dont know what I could have done to my other board unless somthing was wrong with it from the get go. I am going to keep testing and see if I still have issues. If I do, I will re-post.

Thanks again,
Elliot.

Could have just been breadboard/wiring flakiness. Sometimes for me, fresh wires and/or a fresh breadboard helps. I'll also check continuity with a multimeter. Sometimes in that process I discover that I'm just one column off on my breadboard. <facepalm>

I love breadboarding, but breadboards wear out with use, some faster than others. When a breadboard starts becoming unreliable, I mark it "for soldering", and it gets a new job.

It would be interesting to try the other Mega again, keeping everything else the same. Maybe your first Mega is actually fine?

I havent thought about the breadboard wearing. I am curious if it was actually the board or if I did have a wire one pin off or something of the like. Ill def give the other board a shot before moving on with the project. Thanks for the replies!
