Not sure. It's some linux permission thing, but not obvious what aspect isn't working. Try asking in hzeller's repo:

I've searched the rgbmatrix code an instance of setuid/seteuid but no luck. It really makes no sense to force the process into a different user (daemon) unless there's an option set. Any process, obviously, can run as a daemon but does not need that uid.

Frustrating. Yes, I'll open an issue on his repo.

I'm curious why other users haven't run into this. Perhaps they aren't depending on the rgbmatrix code? I don't really want to write yet another h/w driver ...

Found it after grepping core.pyx:

RGBMatrixOptions.drop_privileges = False


Yet another undocumented feature ... :-(
