Embedded RGB Stip leds with connector

by Mor on Tue Aug 20, 2019 3:45 am

Hi,
I am new in this technology and search a simple solution.
I am search of led strip Length 60CM(is my favorite, but not must) and maximum high density,
I need the strip connect to my computer (windows 7) USB port (I not have option of external power output).
What the best solution i can use?
I am will be happy the solution be one unit item if is can to be (controller $ strip leds).
How much leds i can use in this length (maximum leds).

I am go to develop my project with C#(.net framework 4.6).

I am not affiliated with Adafruit, but I can guess at a few answers that they may agree with or not. However, I thought I would answer just to get you thinking.

1) I am not aware of directly controlled usb leds. However, it does depend on whether you want to change the colors or just power a strip. If you want to control colors, I think going with one of the small Arduinos may be your best bet. I have one, and it is incredible. Maybe take a look at their trinket as it controls 5v logic level natively.

2) How large depends on the limits of size and power. The more leds, the more power they require.

as for which strips, take a look at [ur= https://www.adafruit.com/product/3776]dotstars[/url] and neopixels. The neopixels are less densely populated though.

You can take a look at the difference here.

There are other people who sell these types of strips, but quality control varies greatly.

Take a look at the tutorialif you have more questions while you await an official response.

If you need to control the strip from a computer, you’ll probably need the FadeCandy adapter:

https://www.adafruit.com/product/1689

It can drive any of our NeoPixel strips:

https://www.adafruit.com/category/183

and the strips with the highest pixel density are 144 pixels per meter.

60cm of 144pixel/m strip will be about 85 pixels, and each pixel can use a maximum of 60mA for RGB pixels, and 80mA for RGBW pixels. The worst-case current load for 85 RGB pixels is a bit over 5A, and 85 RGBW pixels can use up to 6.8A.

We’ve found that most NeoPixel projects can operate happily on 1/3 to 1/4 of the worst-case estimate, but that still puts the expected current load around 1.5A to 2A. If you don’t have an external power source, you’ll need to make sure your comouter can deliver that kind of current without killing a USB port.

Hi Mike,
You Can approve / reject the option of working with this strip leds (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2328) and microcontroller(https://www.adafruit.com/product/1689)?
Without any external power (Just USB)?

The FadeCandy doesn't work with DotStars, only NeoPixels. The signal protocols for the control messages are different, and DotStars have a different number of pins.
