brand new 2.8" TFT Touch Shield not working

by davidsi on Tue Aug 20, 2019 8:39 pm

I just purchased a 2.8" TFT Touch Shield (PID 1651) and a metro board (PID 50) as well as an Arduino mega. The shield will not work with either of the arduinos. I have checked and set (and unset!) the #define in Adafruit_tftlcd.h and nothing changes. When I run the graphics test I get the following on the monitor :

TFT LCD test
Using Adafruit 2.8" TFT Arduino Shield Pinout
TFT size is 240x320
Unknown LCD driver chip: 1111
If using the Adafruit 2.8" TFT Arduino shield, the line:
#define USE_ADAFRUIT_SHIELD_PINOUT
should appear in the library header (Adafruit_TFT.h).
If using the breakout board, it should NOT be #defined!
Also if using the breakout, double-check that all wiring
matches the tutorial.

I also have the FTDI driver installed (or it would not upload). This is on a new MacBook Pro with a fresh copy of the Arduino studio and the port/board are set correctly

Try installing the ILI9341 library and running the graphicstest example from there:

That one works! What does that mean for any programming I need to change ?

thx

In general, you should follow the code in that example and the guide linked and use that library (ILI9341)

How did you end up trying to use that other library? (appears to be TFTLCD?)

Started off on the ardu-phone page, followed it to the TFT tutorial page and loaded the libraries from there. Should I delete the TFT library and only use the ILI9341 ?

thx

In general, yes. It sounds like maybe a guide needs updating. I'm not seeing where the Arduin-o-Phone guide links to the TFTLCD library:
https://learn.adafruit.com/arduin-o-pho ... e/overview
It seems to link to and use the ILI9341 library:
https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_Le ... ne.ino#L17

Can you link to the page you followed? We can update the guide if needed.

This leads to a section:

8-Bit Library Install
We have example code ready to go for use with these TFTs. It's written for Arduino, which should be portable to any microcontroller by adapting the C++ source.

Two libraries need to be downloaded and installed: first is the Adafruit_TFTLCD library (this contains the low-level code specific to this device),

Ah, OK. Yah, that's a very specific wiring that can be done with the breakout version:
https://www.adafruit.com/product/1770
For the shield version (what you have), just stick with what is shown in this guide:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-2-8 ... -shield-v2

that page also says the shield should work with a mega. It still does not, even using the Ilxxx library.

Odd. Can you post a photo showing the TFT mounted on the Mega.

Can you post a photo of the backside of the TFT showing what these solder pads look like on your version:
