RGB Push Button Code

by dmnagy6192 on Thu Aug 22, 2019 11:46 pm

I recently purchased a Rugged Metal RGB Momentary Pushbutton (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3350) for use in my current project. When pressed, it changes the pattern being displayed on a strip of NeoPixels.

My code for the NeoPixels and function of the button is working fine but I am having trouble with the color displayed on the RGB button itself. I would like the RGB button to cycle through a handful of colors (as seen in the "New Product" video it is featured in on YouTube); however it is only displaying White.

Prior to adding this button to my project, I tested it using the RGB LED example code (https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-ard ... ino-sketch) and the given colors cycled through as expected.

How would I combine the example code (above) into my current project? I tried to simply cut and paste the example code into my project's code but the RGB only displayed white.

I am very new to programming so I apologize if any of this was confusing or if my code is a bit messy.

I am using an Arduino Uno R3 with the following attached:
5v > Common Cathode
Red Anode > PIN11
Green Anode > PIN10
Blue Anode > PIN9
Button > PIN 2 & Ground
NeoPixels > PIN6

Re: RGB Push Button Code

First, you have anode/cathode mixed up. The product page says it's common anode (1 anode, 3 cathodes)

Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
5v > Common Cathode
Red Anode > PIN11
Green Anode > PIN10
Blue Anode > PIN9

Also, this doesn't even compile. It's the "RGB LED Color Setting" code you pasted in. There's a bare block of code... not a function.

But conceptually you need to have your code doing two things at a time: the neopixel effect and the switch LED colour cycling.

The code as it was written can't do that... a neopixel effect function gets called and plays the effect until it's finished, then returns to loop(). It will pretty much have to be rewritten to do both things. This is an example of concurrent computation.

A side note: The switch is a simple pushbutton, and as such is very noisy. When you push it the contacts will bounce for a brief time before settling into a closed position. You can't use that directly to drive an interrupt since you'll get an interrupt with each bounce. If you want to use an interrupt you'll need to electrically debounce the switch. Easier is to use the debounce2 library to debounce it in software and check it regularly. But that, too, would require rewriting it to be concurrent.

Two books to read, both by Simon Monk, are:

Programming Arduino: Next Steps
