EL termination

by Jim2386 on Wed Oct 02, 2019 12:26 pm

Hey guys,

Messing around with EL wire and I've seen the videos on how to connect the power source to the end of the wire. One wire connects to the two thin wires, the other main wire connects to the solid wire in the center. Simple enough.

Two questions:

1. On the other end of the wire (non-power side), what do the wires do there? Does the thin wire loop back on itself ? Does the thick center wire connect to the thin wires to create a loop?

2. If I wanted to wire two colors in series, can I cut the non power end off the first color and just connect the center core to the start of the new color and the thin wires to the start of the thin wires of the new color?

3. I'm working on a project that is very tightly packed. I know EL wire uses higher voltage but lower current. Can I use silicone wire to connect between the colors of EL wire? It would really help me bend around tight corners.....

Thanks
Jim

1. No special termination is required. The EL wire can be cut at any point.
2/3. Yes, you can splice different colors. And you can use lengths of regular wire between different sections of EL. Just connect center wire to center wire and the corona wires to the corona wires.

Ok but let me reword one question.

Say you have a single piece of EL straight of of the box.....power it up. The whole wire lights up.

Now take some flush cutters and cut the wire in half. The wire that has one end connected to the battery.....does it still light up?

Yes, it will still light up. There is no termination needed at the end of the wire.
