24 neopixels ring does not work with crickit board

by LouH on Tue Dec 17, 2019 4:24 pm

I ordered #1586 Dec 5, 1919 Invoice # 2205140, a 24 neopixel ring with the crickit feather board to make a robot. I have all of the crickit boards and the 24 neopixel ring will not light up at all on the neopixel port on any of the Crickits. Now the problem is not enough drive for this 24 neopixel ring. The 7 neopixel ring works fine on the Crickits. The wires to the ring is 22 gauge and about 10 inches long.

The 24 neopixel ring will work using a 5v logic Arduino Uno or Mega, so I tried a TXB0108 level shifter with a Arduino Due and it would still not work the 24 neopixel ring. The setup was a 5v 4amp power supply that I used with the Crickit to the + pin of ring and - pin to the ground. The 3.3v from the Arduino Due to the LV side of the TXB0108 and the HV side of the TXB0108 to the 5 volt from the power supply. Plus a 4700uf capacitor across the power supply on the breadboard. Still not enough drive to make this 24 neopixel ring work.

The 7 neopixel ring works fine in either setup, so I think I need another #1586 24 neopixel ring to finish the Crickit robot.

The only way to get this 24 neopixel ring to work with any 3.3 board, is to put a 1N4001 diode in the 5 volt power line to drop the voltage down to around 4.3 volts that is going to the neopixel ring. Please respond as I still think that there is a problem with this 24 neopixel ring.

The power and data to the pixels need to be close in value. Sometimes 5-volt power and 3.3-volt data will work but it is not recommended.

I know but, I have to also use the diode on the 5 volt power line on the 4 crickits that I have in stock to get the this 24 neopixel ring to work. The crickit is 5 v logic and not 3.3 v logic. So what is wrong? The 5 v 4 amp power supply for the crickit is 5.2 volts with no load. Please let me know what you think about replacing the 24 neopixel ring or is this a common problem with the crickit? Since I do not have any other 24 neopixel ring to test, just not sure if that is a new problem.

01/8/2020 I just got another 24 ring from a supplier on Amazon and it works like it should with the CPX and the Crickit board.
I am not happy with the poor support from Your support people on this problem as I am now sure that the other 24 neopixel board that I got from you is bad. Please address this problem. I ordered this part on Dec 5 2019 #1586.

From your first post above:
The 24 neopixel ring will work using a 5v logic Arduino Uno or Mega

By this, do you mean you tested your actual ring on a 5V board and it worked OK? If so, does it still work OK at 5V level?

Yes it works OK at the 5V (5.2) level without the diode to drop the voltage for the power on the Arduino Uno or Mega. But it does not work on the Crickit boards or with any level shifter unless I put the diode back in the power line to drop the voltage down to about 4.3 volts. I now have another 24 neopixel ring that works fine on the Crickit board or any 3.3 board with a level shifter. So I still think that the 24 neopixel ring that I got from you is not working right. What do you think is the problem?

its a little odd - we're not sure its the neopixel ring, but its worth trying another one.
email support@adafruit with a link to this thread asking for another neopixel ring!

Hi,

Out of curiosity I'd love to see photos of how you are connecting the Adafruit 24 pixel ring to the Crickit board. Can you show the circuit clearly?

One question in my mind is whether the Crickit board provides a 470 ohm resistor for the signal to the Neopixel ring.

Also, what ring did you order from Amazon?

I'm not an employee of Adafruit, Inc. I'm just another customer with some curiosity.

Thanks so much

Bob

The replacement 24 neopixel ring works fine with the Crickit board.

The connection for the ring was 5 volt NeoPixel pin on the Crickit , Gnd to Gnd on the neopixel ring, and the center pin on the Crickit to the data in pin on the neopixel. The ring from Amazon looks just like the one from Adafruit but on the back of ring it says DIYmall WS2812.

To sum it all up. I now have two 24 neopixel rings that work with the Crickit boards and also work with any of the logic level shifter that I have in stock with any 3.3 logic board. The other 24 neopixel ring will only work with the 5v Arduino boards or the Crickits if I put a 1N4001 diode in the 5 volt vcc line to drop the vcc voltage down to 4.2 volts.

This ring will not work with a logic level shifter and the 1N4001 diode in the 5 volt (5.2) from RPI power pack on any of my 3.3 logic boards.
