mis-wired stemma connectors with Adafruit 3919 neopixel stri

by fnord on Wed Dec 18, 2019 12:09 am

I recently ordered 3 of these NeoPixel strips: https://www.adafruit.com/product/3919

I was trying to use one of them today on a HalloWing M4 and it wouldn't work. After a lot of trouble shooting, I think I see the problem: they seem to be mis-wired. On the Stemma connector, the 5V power should be in the middle, but on the neopixel strips I got 5V is wired to the outside, where the data line should be. I will try to attach some pics....

... checking my order history, it was just 2 weeks ago (on Dec. 3rd) when I ordered the 3 neopixel strips. they are still "in stock". I hope someone at the Adafruit home base can check the bin on #3919 ... it looks to me like there is a bad batch where power and data lines got switched at the Stemma end.

Hi!

I think what probably happens is that sometimes, the companies that supply these strips to Adafruit make changes to the strip wiring but don't announce them. You have to examine the strip carefully in order to determine which wires are for what. I have 2 NeoPixel strips bought quite some time ago and I'm not sure if they have exactly the same wiring sequence. The wiring is very fiddly, you have to look it over and often make changes depending on what the pixel strip is showing and the result you want.

So even though you may have particular connectors, you still have to figure out which wires on the strip are doing what and adjust accordingly. That might mean setting your connectors aside and wiring with different parts.

Please note I am not an employee of Adafruit. I'm just another customer trying to help you. Indeed I feel sympathetic, I miswire things too.

Thanks so much

Bob

The second picture on the product page of this NeoPixel strip (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3919) shows it plugged into a HalloWing. In that pic, the red wire is in the middle. Compare with these pics I just took, where the red wire is on the outside. Aren't these strips supposed to be "plug-and-play" for HalloWing and other devices with NeoPixel Stemma connectors?

Hi!

I see what you mean now! I didn't realize Adafruit makes devices like the Hallowing that come with "NeoPixel jacks." Interesting...and I stand corrected.

Thanks so much

Bob

hi! see my earlier comments. I ordered 3 of these in early December and they are all mis-wired the same way, with red and green wires swapped at the Stemma end.

hi - so yeah we got mis-wired cables. if you're handy with tweezers you can gently remove the wires from the plastic housing and re-insert them to re-arrange the wires. if ya aren't comfy with that, email support@adafruit and ask for an RMAPHIL and replacements :)
