Fiber optic light source question

by durdee on Sat Jan 04, 2020 5:19 pm

hello,
Just wondering if I need to provide a resistor to bring this to 100mA or if the circuitry is internal. I’m planning on running two of these as illuminators for macro photo work and want to be able to run one or both from the same power supply on separate switches.

No need for a current limiting resistor. Just supply 9-12V.

Great, thanks! One more question, is it possible to use a trinket to make a dimmer for this? Is there a project page for this sort of thing on the website already?

You can use one of the PWM capable pins of the Trinket to control a transistor that drives the light source.

This example shows a Gemma - but a Trinket will work as well:

What portable battery inverter that you guys sell on your site can I use for the LED Fiber Optic Light Source (9-12V)? https://www.adafruit.com/product/4169

All other product pages I've seen for EL suggest the portable power source but not this product page and this light source seems to have a female plug that won't work with the inverters you have for sale. Would I need to re-wire or what would you suggest?

Thank you!

@dmitri69 -
All other product pages I've seen for EL suggest the portable power source but not this product page . . .

Fiber optics and EL are not the same thing. You do not need an inverter for this product.
As it states in the description: https://www.adafruit.com/product/4169
you need to power it with 9-12V and 100mA of current,

Thank you. I understand they're not the same thing.. simply stating that on this product page portable power setup isn't explicitly addressed as it is on other product pages (no suggested link to battery pack).

The question was - do you sell a portable power source on your site (9-12V so 6 or 8 AAs) that would seamlessly work with this LED to give it portability and, if not, how can I make it work? It seemed the connector this LED comes with wouldn't fit the battery packs you're selling.

Appreciate the help.

Any DC power source in the 9V-12V range will work - provided that it is capable of 100mA or more. 6 or 8 Alkaline cells in series - or 8 - 10 NiMH cells in series would be suitable sources.

Battery holders can be found here:

https://www.adafruit.com/category/563

Power source connectors vary. Most of our packs have either JST PH series female connectors, or 2.1mm male barrel plugs.

Female barrel adapters can be found here: https://www.adafruit.com/product/368

And we have male JST PH pigtails here: https://www.adafruit.com/product/3814
