Disable 128x64 OLED green "on" LED?

by idangazit on Mon Aug 03, 2020 4:28 pm

I purchased a 128x64 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/326) monochrome OLED display. On the underside of the board there's a green LED that is on when power is supplied, My build is battery-powered, and I want to disable / turn off that LED to conserve power.

I haven't found any clues in the SSD1306 library on GitHub.

Any ideas? I'd also appreciate any other tips regarding cutting down on the power usage for these displays. I've already done display.dim(), which seems to lower the output brightness of the pixels some. I was sad to see that the total current draw was often > 5mA, hoping that there are strategies for getting this down some (beyond keeping the amount of lit pixels low).

Cheers,

That LED and the adjacent 10K resistor are simply connected (in series) between 3.3v and ground.. There's no way to control it. You will have to physically (and carefully) remove the LED and/or resistor to disable it.
