Recommendation for Light Installation

by ky_derek on Wed Aug 12, 2020 7:41 am

Looking for recommended tech for a large light installation. It will be comprised of many many many individually addressed LEDs (1000 or more). I want to be able to slowly or quickly change the color and intensity of individual lights or even clusters of lights. Should I just consider an Arduino board for this, or is there a better controller? Also, where can I go to learn about the power requirements for such a large installation. Obviously, an Arduino board isn't powerful enough to power this many lights.

Thank you for any assistance. Stay safe out there!

Neopixels or DotStars are probably the way to go then:

You will need something with at least 3 bytes of RAM per pixel. With 1000 pixels that rules out older boards like the Arduino UNO, but there are many more recent vintage Arduino compatible boards with plenty of room. Another thing to consider is your preference for programming language. Most boards support the Arduino language (C++). Some of the more advanced boards support programming in Python.

Also, where can I go to learn about the power requirements for such a large installation.

You might start by reading through this guide: https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-neopixel-uberguide
This section covers power: https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-neo ... -neopixels
