Super-bright 5mm IR LED — peak continuous brightness with 9V

by benguild on Tue Aug 18, 2020 4:29 am

I have one of these LEDs and was wondering how bright it could be off of a 9V battery, ideally without PWM to simplify and given that the flicker could be obvious if someone was recording video. What’s the smallest resistor that would be safe, given the LED could be on for up to 3/4 of a second or so? (but it’d be off for at least that afterward) ... Slow pulse for a morse code like signal, etc.

These are rated for 100mA continuous and have a forward voltage of about 1.4v at that current level.

An 82 ohm 1-watt resistor should work.
