32x64 RGB Matrix with Metro M4 Airlift Lite Behaving Badly

by rwbrenton on Thu Aug 20, 2020 7:03 pm

Okay, so I carefully followed this because I'm a massive newb at this stuff: https://learn.adafruit.com/32x16-32x32-rgb-led-matrix/overview

I'm going through it with a Metro M4 Airlift Lite and the 5V 4A (4000mA) switching power supply - UL Listed.

I cut the PCB trace between the two pads next to the clk and soldered a wire from the adjacent “CLK” pin to the “Analog In 4” pin as directed. I also updated the code to use A4 for the clock.

What I've ended up with looks like it's trying real hard, but sadly failing.

Pictures of the connections are attached.

Thanks. Sorry, should have also asked, which specific matrix display. You can just link to product page.

OK, one quick thing to check - are you on the correct connector on the back of the matrix panel? See here for how to check:

Sorry, I thought I had included this picture. I connected it to the DATA_IN.

Thanks. That looks correct.

Did you do a continuity check on the scratched pad to make sure it actually go disconnected?

Is the Airlift the only Metro board you have?

Thanks. Also, can you post another photo of the shield that's more from this angle:

That will help us better check the soldering on the header pins.

I did a continuity check and that scratched pad is definitely disconnected. Here are a couple more shots of the shield.

Thanks for the photo. I'd suggest going over all your pins and checking the soldering. Some look OK, but others look like they may be potentially cold soldered and not wetted out enough on the pads. The SCL pin in particular is definitely not wetted out enough. But that pin is not used for the RGB matrix, so that's not the specific issue here. But could be a similar pin(s) somewhere else.

Similarly for all the pins underneath on the ribbon cable connector.

Good info here:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-gui ... n-problems

For any pins that look like they need re-work, you can just go back in with your soldering iron and try reflowing them.

So I went through and tried to correct anything that didn't look like it was soldered correctly. This is where we are now, with the same results:
