NeoPixel Jewel operation

by tkudog on Mon Aug 24, 2020 1:15 pm

Hello,

My first post, I am just starting out. Afraid to try a big expensive Neopixel strip, I went with the "NeoPixel Jewel - 7 x 5050 RGBW LED w/ Integrated Drivers - Warm White - ~3000K" being driven off of a Arduino Uno.

How do you operate this thing? I opened the example "Simple" from Adafruit Neopixel library, changed number of pixels to 7, changed Adafruit_NeoPixel pixels(NUMPIXELS, PIN, NEO_GRB + NEO_KHZ800); to Adafruit_NeoPixel pixels(NUMPIXELS, PIN, NEO_GRBW + NEO_KHZ800); and uploaded the code.

And it behaves weird. Center LED never goes out. First pass it lights up the first 7 in green, like it should. Second pass lights up 5. Then 3. Then 7. Then blinks. What did I miss?

That seems like the necessary code changes. So let's check the hardware. Can you post a photo of your setup showing how you have everything connected.

Red and black go to a 5V DC supply (not the Arduino). Yellow is data Input to pin 6 on Arduino.

Thanks. That soldering looks fine. The separate power supply may be the issue. Try powering via the UNO.
NeoPixel Jewel GND to Arduino UNO GND
NeoPixel Jewel 5V to Arduino 5V

THANK YOU! Much better! Also works is tying the 5VDC supply to the Arudino ground, as apparently you are supposed to. (I did not interpret my NeoPixel Jewel as a "digital LED strip" and therefore didn't read the sticky at the top of forum).

Thank you!

Yep, that would also work. See here for more details and info:
