Monochrome display with a desktop ereader application?

by xivzunedu on Wed Sep 02, 2020 3:45 pm

There's lots of awesome documentation on how to draw shapes and images onto a monochrome display. There's also seemingly 1000 LCDs that a raspberry pi can drive directly. I wanted to know if a raspberry pi (or any SBC really) could use a monochrome display as it's primary output from an ereader application like (Buka)[https://github.com/oguzhaninan/Buka]? Would it be possible to have an SBC communicate to a MCU and have the MCU drive the monochrome display? Am I a crazy mad scientist for thinking this is possible!?

I looked through the repaper drivers and it looks like I'd have to get dirty with low-level spi communication to even have a chance for this to work. Is there some reason why I shouldn't bother trying to accomplish this? It'd take me months if not a year for me to hack something together so someone tell me not to bother now before I sink a bunch of time into this.
