Minimal setup for NeoPixel

Hi all,

I'm a software guy far away from home, would appreciate some input. I'm building a NeoStrip thing and am very happy with my first prototype (image attached).

I want to expand the project in two directions; adding a couple of controllers for adjusting the light in various ways. I'm thinking just basic potentiometers. Is that the simplest way to do that? Such as, turning a nob to lower the light intensity at night, for instance. Or rotating the palette etc.

Then, I'd like to replicate the project to give as gifts to a couple of friends, and this is really the main question; I suspect my setup is overkill and a smaller Arduino and power adapter thingee would work. Do you you have any recommendations for a minimalistic setup to achieve this? I want to be able to still be able to use the awesome controller library y'all provided so I'm thinking a smaller Arduino, with some sort of power option? Not sure here, and I'm not sure what factors to consider. Would appreciate any input and product suggestions.

My choice would be a Feather M4 Express https://www.adafruit.com/product/3857 or ItsyBitsy M4 Express https://www.adafruit.com/product/3800 with a LiPo Backpack https://www.adafruit.com/product/2124. That you give you plenty of computational power for doing all sorts of effects, use a rechagable (via USB) LiPo battery (or power via USB) and give the option of using either C++ (Arduino) or CircuitPython (and it's NeoPixel animation library https://learn.adafruit.com/circuitpython-led-animations).

Both give you a much smaller footprint as well.

For control, reading a simple potentiometer using an analog input would be fine (be clear on linear vs. logarithmic potemtiometers). An alternative would be to use rotary encoders https://www.adafruit.com/product/377
