That could be connection related. Make sure you are on the input side of the strip. Can you use a breadboard or something to help insure better connections?

It’s a quality control issue...the LED arrived dead....the other strip works fine...not a newb...just need a way of getting a return.

it can happen but its incredibly rare that an LED strip is dead
have you checked that you're sending data into the DIN pin, that you have tried a device with 5V output - an Arduino UNO or compatible is ideal

Yea I use these neopixel strips all the time (see my buying history). First time with these side stripe ones but it’s identical twin that it came with is already in a sculpture and working fine. The part is defective to the best of my testing and no amount of texting about the part will change this outcome.
