1694 - 10.1" Display & Audio 1280x800 IPS software control v

Hello!

I use the 1694 - 10.1" Display & Audio 1280x800 IPS setup for a Raspberry Pi Zero W project where I will display a dashboard and play music.
I want to adjust the speaker volume with software on the rPi.
I have written a python script utilizing alsaaudio to control the rPi audio, expecting this to adjust the HDMI output volume, which would in turn adjust the volume/signal available to the 1694 amplifier circuitry.
This is not the case. The speakers play just as loud, no matter what level the raspberry pi volume is at.

Is there a way to control the speaker volume with rPi software instead of the pushbuttons on the 1694 board?
