raspberry pi RGB matrix bonnet current/power

by reinierdevlaam on Sun Jan 10, 2021 5:42 am

I have the Adafruit RGB LED matrix bonnet for raspberry pi, rev B. I wonder what is the max current that it can supply to the pannels throught the protection circuit. Looking at the specs of the AON7401 it is 12A, Am I correct here? Or is it 30A

if I have a 32x32 matrix all LEDS bright white the current required for the panel would be 1024x 3 x 12ma = 36A...is that correct? Doesn't sound right to me...

Finally, the Bonnet is mounted over the processor of the pi. Mounting cooling, even heatsinks will no longer be possible. Any alternatives for that?

The AON7401 looks like it could handle up to 35A at room temp.

We recommend a 2-4A @ 5v power supply for our NeoPixel 32x32 matrices

LEDs are multiplexed. on a 32 LED wide panel, only 64 LEDs are on at a single time (two scanlines)
