Defective 64x32 RGB panel?

by Fayepunk on Wed Mar 24, 2021 12:28 pm

So, back in December i ordered a number of things from Adafruit, the one i was most excited for being the 64x32 RGB panel (4mm pitch) and accompanying feather and featherboard i selected to interface with the display. However, once I had everything soldered, wired, and programmed, the panel would only light up the row at the top and one random row towards the middle, but nothing else. I tried for weeks to understand what I did wrong, and figured it must've been my noob soldering skills.

Naturally, I decided I should opt for the Matrix Portal, as I wouldn't need to solder anything and it seemed incredibly easy to set up and use. And it was! I just received it recently and had no problem coding and configuring the portal, I'm actually very impressed with its design. However, I still ended up with the same issue! only two rows of the display seem to be working at all, despite no signs of damage to any of the LEDs, the PCB, or any of the board components on the other side(caps, pin connectors, ICs), and no errors are being thrown or crashing the code, the portal seems to think the display is working properly, but I just can't wrap my head around what I could be doing wrong.

Could the LEDs themselves have been damaged during shipping? What should I do from here? Image

Just to be sure, is this the RGB LED matrix panel you are using?

Hmmm. Yah, should be able to connect that up and just go. What program are you loading onto the Matrix Portal?

in that photo it;s the Matrix portal Moon Clock from the Adafruit github repo, though I tried with a couple other codes as well, like the falling sand example, which from what I could tell from the two rows changing colors depending on how i moved the display, the code seemed to be working perfectly.

Thanks. Can you post another photo showing how you have the Matrix Portal attached with all the connections.

This is the example project you are trying to run?

Thanks. That looks fine.

Let's rule out it being software related. To do that, use this UF2 file to test. Double press the reset button on the MatrixPortal to get the MATRIXBOOT folder. Then drag the UF2 file there.
matrixportal_test.UF2
(1 MiB) Downloaded 4 times

After it is done copying, it should reset and run.

What do you get on the display?

Bummer. OK, let's replace the panel and see what happens.

Send an email to support@adafruit.com with a link to this thread and your order number and they can send you a replacement 64x32 RGB matrix panel.
