64x32 LED Matrix Lines

by RomaniDream on Thu Apr 01, 2021 12:00 am

This along with different patterns keep being displayed, and I have no idea why. Is this something I can fix? This is being powered with a 5-volt 4-amp power supply, a Raspberry Pi 3 A+, and a small RGB matrix bonnet.

It would be welcome to know what it should show. It helps to understand what goes wrong. For example wrong dimension or buffer setup.

Where did you get the LED matrix panel?

Is this the Bonnet you are using?

Anything, really. The scanlines run properly, but it always shows these patterns when I try to display anything. The patterns only change when I power it on different times.

I got the panel from https://adafru.it/2278 and yes, that is the bonnet I'm using.

For the software setup, did you go through this process?

If so, what is the command line for the example you are trying to run?

Yes, I followed the guide and ran that script. I tried c-example, clock, ledcat, and various demo programs from demo.
The command line for demo:
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
sudo ./demo --led-rows=32 --led-cols=64 --led-slowdown-gpio=4 -D 0 -t 10
And no matter what slowdown I use, it all looks the same.

Hmmm. OK, let's check the hardware further. Please post a photo showing the back of the panel and Pi so we can see how everything is connected together.

It's a basic setup for now, but here it is.

I do want to add that the first time I plugged this in, the bonnet didn't turn on until I reseated it. It might have something to do with this, but I'm not sure.

Thanks. That looks fine.

When you ran the install script, did you choose the "quality" or "convenience" option?

What operating system image are you starting with?

I chose the Convenience option. I'm using the regular Raspberry Pi OS distribution.

Weird. That all seems like pretty normal usage.

Can you post a photo of the backside of the Bonnet so we can look for any obvious hardware issues. A photo like this view:

I got the replacement bonnet, and here's what I did:
The first thing I did is connect it to the Raspberry Pi and plug in the power supply, and it started up normally. After that, I powered it off and connected the matrix panel, but then I got the exact same behavior: it didn't start when I connected power. This leads me to believe the matrix panel is actually at fault here.
