12V Neopixel Struggling

by Kaitlyntoast on Mon Apr 26, 2021 2:09 pm

Hi all,

I bought this Adafruit 12V Neopixel strand:
https://www.adafruit.com/product/3869

and have been trying to get it to work at all but have hit a wall in figuring it out, I have been asking many forums and subreddits but no luck. (Mostly due to my own stupidity and incapability)

So after I bought the strand, I also got an Arduino Uno R3 and cable, the Adafruit 12V adapter, but unfortunately I lost the JST 3 Pin cable that came with the Neopixel, and these were sold out:
https://www.adafruit.com/product/1663

So then I bought some that looked almost right on Sparkfun:
https://www.sparkfun.com/products/13685

And then when they came in, it was 100% not compatible. So I then started to get stupid. I cut the JST adapter off the Neopixel cables, soldered the cables to the Sparkfun cables with the breadboard jumpers and then tried getting it to work.

They did not work.

I then bought some other JST SM wires from amazon here:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DC ... UTF8&psc=1

They also look way too small in gauge, and I realize now I can't get these cables into the arduino any way as jumpers.

So if any kind soul out there has advice for how I can get my Neopixel strand to work I would be thrilled.

How are you powering the strand?

Hi Dave, I'm powering the strand through the Arduino with the 12v adapter, I know there was a lot of type on the product page about sharing ground- but looking at this photo from said page and doing a lot of research led me to the conclusion that it was possible to just power the neopixel strand from the arduino with the 12V adapter, which converts it to 5V, I believe?

But what do you have the strand's V+ connected to? There are several voltage/power outputs on the Arduino. You want to use Vin since that connects to whatever is coming in the barrel jack. This strand required 9v-12v Powering with 5v output won't work (and can't supply enough current for more than a few pixels).

I had the V+ strand in the 5V slot, the ground in the ground slot on the same side, programmed the basic Neopixel strand example from the library to the corresponding numbered pin on the Arduino.

From the looks of that photo from the product page- this is an Adafruit Metro, which has a similar voltage to the Arduino 5V I was plugging into, so it should of worked, theoretically.

Wait no...you are right- I had it in the wrong slot. from the image, it should of been in V-in. Apologies. I'll try that now
