Only using 3 of 30 LEDs on the strip. Do I need external pow

I want to start using LED strips. As I learn and prototype, I'll only be lighting 3 of the LEDs on a 30 LED neopixel strip. Can I power them from the Raspberry Pi or Arduino 5V pin? Do I have to cut the strip into smaller strips? Do the un-illuminated LEDs still contribute to the power considerations? TIA

If you are only using 3 pixels, you can probably get by powering them from your processor. The unlit pixels have an idle current consumption of about 1mA per pixel.
