Under cabinet lighting using the Ultra flexible led strip

by ctroxtell on Tue May 11, 2021 12:29 pm

Just trying to see what all I would need to use https://www.adafruit.com/product/4839 for my under cabinet lighting. I have granite counter tops and they are very dark and difficult to see anything on and was hoping this led strip would throw enough light on them to be able to see. Would I just need this and a 12v 5a power source and the end to attach the wires to the power plug?

For the most basic installation, that should do it. 5A is overkill; according to the product page 2A should suffice for one 5m strip.

You probably want a switch of some sort to turn it off when not needed. There are a lot of things you could do beyond that. Use a microcontoller board with a light sensor and PWM control the brightness of the strip to be gentler at night (see https://learn.adafruit.com/transistors-101/example-uses). You could add in a proximity sensor to have it turn on when you got near (see https://learn.adafruit.com/proximity-based-lighting for ideas).

It has the potential to be a really fun project.
